Plans for a future Linux release

I recently finished a driver to use CANopenNode under NuttX. Now, I'd like to do quite some tests and well use all of this. Problem is my whole workflow only uses linux (Ubuntu to dev and NuttX is (or tries to be) also POSIX compliant). Problem is, as far as I've seen, this editor only works on windows.

I'd like a realease for linux and/or docs on how to build for linux (cf #189).

I tried using Wine. No success so far but will keep trying and if, at some point, it ends up working, I could write the linux build documentation.

Got good and bad news for you.

Good news:

• Other have got the editor to work with linux in the past at least.
• We are working on converting to newer .net version what will work natively on linux, mac & windows
• The cli is currently working

bad news:

• The GUI is not ready..yet, that is the EDSEditorGUI2 in the source.

If you tell me a little about what function you need in the gui i might be able to get that working.

Tbh, I just need my node to send a few predefined PDOs to another device and MAYBE get an answer but I think the answer can be safely ignored if needed. I just need a basic OD file pair to do that...

I think I'll update the Makefile to make things easier for Linux users (there is one so why not use it haha).

Tested it on Ubuntu 25.10 the other day and editing and exploring canopennode source files work without any problems.
There are know bugs for other export formats, but it should work for your limited use

Whenever I try I have this : Feature default literal' cannot be used because it is not part of the C# 7.0 language specification` (mono doesn't really support C# 7 and is deprecated moreover...).

So... I have many doubts about this but I made everything needed POSIX compatible : #197.
I made some scripts to run this all and modified ever so slightly the test projects (which were already hugely different one from another). I tested all of this on Ubuntu 22.04 and it works but I'm not sure this is a great idea and not sure either if the tests will still run as you were running them before so the linked PR is and will probably remain for some times a draft.

Noticed Lars comment that EDSEditor runs fine on Ubuntu 25.10 with mono. Some compatibility issues with Windows 11 reported recently and some workaround possible?

EDSEditor used to work fine on Windows 11. Recently with Windows 11 24H2 updates, unable to edit PDO mapping fields, both RX and TX. It is not clear if it is a recent security update that is causing this or change in .NET (enabled .NET 3.5 also in addition to default, just in case that was the problem).

Did you run the files in net481 directory?

At least on Ubuntu 24.04 and mono 6.8.0.105 it does not start.

Some news from my side: I found myself some time for CANopen and I hope it will last for a while. Currently I have a strong intention to push this project as we already discussed more than a year ago: #102
I short, we would like this project to be more modular, which means: clean central core with protobuffer based database + independent importers, exporters and new GUI operating around that core. Not much change for the user experience. Multi-platform, of course. My wish is VS Code for development.

Take also a look into (experimental) proto file: https://github.com/CANopenNode/CANopenEditor/blob/main/libEDSsharp/proto/CanOpen.proto. Database for our program will probably be a network of CANopen devices.

I have some practice with C#, but before continuing I would like to first learn C# and .net more comprehensive. After this project will be nice in modular, it is a relative small step to add an online mode. With the clean core we will have the possibility to extend GUI or other according to our imagination.
