Summary
I successfully installed and used the official ChatGPT Linux preview on a Steam Deck running SteamOS 3.8.16 (build 20260716.1).
SteamOS is Arch-based and is not currently listed as an officially supported distribution, but the application works natively in my tests.
This installation method was developed and tested collaboratively with ChatGPT/Codex. The assistant was substantially involved in researching the compatibility approach, designing the user-local installation procedure, generating each command, interpreting the results and screenshots, and guiding the complete validation process step by step.
I executed every command on the physical Steam Deck and confirmed each result before ChatGPT/Codex prepared the next step.

Installation method
Because SteamOS does not use
apt, I did not install the package system-wide.Instead, we:

codex:callbackUpdate – October 6, 2026
I’ve continued using and testing the Linux Codex app on SteamOS since the original post.
Local project folders:
Opening and modifying local Codex project folders is working fine for me. As long as the app build itself runs properly, I haven’t had any issues working with local projects.
Updates:
I currently update the app manually. Whenever a new Linux build becomes available, I first let ChatGPT check the package/version and the update procedure, then I install it and test it before keeping the new version. We’ve gone through this process successfully several times now on SteamOS.
So at this point, local folder access and manual updating are both tested and working reliably for me.
If anyone needs more details or wants me to test something specific on Steam Deck / SteamOS, feel free to ask.
