Tiled terrain generation

[putuoshan]

Hi Otto,

I like what you have done a lot. Especially, since there are hardly any free tools for terrain generation.
My question to you is: Is there a way to generate tiled terrains for example for an open world game? Or is this something you plan on adding?

Hi, thank you for the feedback!

Concerning tiled terrains, do you mean:

• is it possible to export the current heightmap as a set of tiled maps (as a bunch of files)?
• is it possible to edit with separate heightmaps and connect them later?

I wonder if it is possible to make a map way larger than the preset size. Once the heightmap is generated it could be split manually.
And if that isn't possible would it be possible to make separete heighmaps and to connect them later. But I think this can be tricky, as in that case nodes would need to be placced at coordinates to get approx. the same countour where the seams of the separate maps are.

There is actually a feature for that in "File>Bake and Export" that allows exporting at a higher resolution. The maximum resolution is limited by the available RAM though (for now).

For the world build approach, there is mockup of a "World Builder"/"Graph Manager" available but it is at an early development stage. It allows using different graphs, position them in a global world and transfer data.

At some point, I had the idea of stitching various heightmaps to force them to be tilde, maybe that's something to push forward.

Sounds promising. I'd be happy to help. However, I am not a professional programmer. :)
Let me know if you want some help.

Thanks for the proposition. I'm working on some other topics right now but I'll let know when I'll get back to this one.
