Closes #99.

Problem

Reopening the app lost the playlist the last song belonged to — the queue you can skip through and "Up Next" were gone.

Root cause

rehydrateFromTrackPlayer() rebuilt state from the native TrackPlayer queue only. That queue is unreliable:

  1. It is empty after the OS kills the app — nothing to rehydrate.
  2. addTracks() skips tracks with no resolved audioUrl, so a long playlist restores as a truncated queue and next/prev only see those few tracks.

The logical playlist was never persisted (utils/storage.ts only has @liked_songs, @previously_played_songs, @playlists, caches).

Fix

  • New modules/playbackSession.ts — snapshots the logical playlist + index to AsyncStorage on every playTrack(), stripping expired audioUrl/url. Capped at 200 tracks; empty playlist clears the key.
  • resolveRestoredSession() — pure decision function:
    • empty native queue → restore snapshot at saved index (clamped);
    • truncated native queue (strict subset of snapshot, active track present) → restore the full snapshot with the active track mapped back to its original position;
    • queue in agreement → return null, existing native path runs untouched.
  • rehydrateFromTrackPlayer() consults the snapshot first.
  • clearPlayer() clears the snapshot so an explicit stop is not resurrected.

No new dependencies; AsyncStorage already used throughout.

Verification

  • node tests/playback-session-regression.cjs → 7/7 pass. Executes the real resolveRestoredSession() (AsyncStorage import stripped): cold start, index clamping, truncated-queue recovery to full playlist at original index, deferral when the queue agrees, unknown native track, null session, empty snapshot.
  • npx tsc --noEmit → no errors in modules/playbackSession.ts or contexts/PlayerContext.tsx.

Notes

Playback still starts paused after a cold start — this PR restores the context (playlist, index, Up Next). Auto-resuming audio would need AppKilledPlaybackBehavior.ContinuePlayback on the native service, deliberately left alone here.

Summary by Sourcery

Restore playlist context across app restarts by persisting and reconciling the logical playback session with the native queue.

Bug Fixes:

  • Restore the logical playlist context, current position, and Up Next state after a cold start or when the native queue is incomplete.
  • Prevent explicitly cleared playback sessions from being resurrected on the next app launch.

Enhancements:

  • Persist playback-session metadata independently of the native queue while removing volatile stream URLs and limiting stored playlists to 200 tracks.
  • Recover the full logical playlist when the native queue contains only a truncated subset, while preserving the existing native rehydration path when queues agree.

Tests:

  • Add regression coverage for cold-start restoration, index clamping, truncated-queue recovery, queue agreement, unknown tracks, missing sessions, and empty playlists.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Playback sessions now persist the playlist and current track across app restarts, restoring them when possible.
    • Clearing the player also clears the saved playback session.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Restored playlists retain their saved track order and position, including when the native playback queue contains only part of the playlist.
    • Invalid or empty saved sessions are ignored.

The app lost the playlist the last song belonged to on cold start.

rehydrateFromTrackPlayer() rebuilt state from the native TrackPlayer queue
only, which is unreliable in two ways:
  - the queue is empty after the OS kills the process, so nothing restored;
  - addTracks() skips tracks whose audioUrl has not resolved yet, so a long
playlist came back as a truncated queue with no way to reach the rest.

Add modules/playbackSession.ts: snapshot the logical playlist + index to
AsyncStorage on every playTrack(), strip expired audio URLs, and on cold
start restore the full playlist — mapping a truncated native queue's active
track back to its original position so next/prev and Up Next work again.
clearPlayer() clears the snapshot so an explicit stop is not restored.

tests/playback-session-regression.cjs executes the real resolver: 7/7.

Reviewer's Guide

The PR introduces an AsyncStorage-backed logical playback-session snapshot and integrates it into cold-start rehydration, allowing the app to restore playlist context and the active index even when the native queue is empty or truncated, while preserving the existing native path when it is authoritative.

📝 Walkthrough

PlayerContext now persists the logical playlist and active index. During rehydration, it resolves the saved session against the native queue and restores the session when applicable. Clearing the player removes the persisted session.

Changes: Playback session persistence

Layer / File(s) Summary
Playback session storage
modules/playbackSession.ts
Adds AsyncStorage helpers to save, load, and clear playback sessions. Saved playlists contain up to 200 tracks without audioUrl or url, and saved indexes are clamped to playlist bounds.
Resolve and apply saved sessions
modules/playbackSession.ts, contexts/PlayerContext.tsx, tests/playback-session-regression.cjs
Adds resolver logic for empty and truncated native queues. PlayerContext saves the effective playlist during playback, uses resolved sessions during rehydration, and clears the saved session when clearing the player. Regression tests cover restoration and fallback cases.

Hey - I've reviewed your changes and they look great!

Sourcery assessment

Needs a human reviewer. If the persisted playlist or index is wrong, a cold start can restore the wrong playback context and that snapshot remains in AsyncStorage even after reverting the code. The impact is bounded and repairable by clearing or overwriting the session; no money, access, or irreversible user data is affected.

Finding details

P2 · Persistence layer and rehydrate integration untested; no CI job runs the test.

tests/playback-session-regression.cjs

The test strips import statements and executes only resolveRestoredSession, so savePlaybackSession / loadPlaybackSession / clearPlaybackSession — including the JSON round-trip and the cap/index arithmetic the cited evidence concerns — are never executed, and the new rehydrateFromTrackPlayer branch (the state writes and early return) is not exercised. package.json has no test script that runs this file; pr-checks.yml is title validation only; react-native-cicd.yml triggers on pull requests but its only build job is gated to push/workflow_dispatch and is skipped here. Consequence: a storage-layer or cap-arithmetic regression can ship with no failing signal. Nonblocking, and it does not carry the posture; the natural follow-up is a save→load case around the 200 boundary plus wiring the file into a workflow.

Owner action: Before merge: Add a save→load case around the 200 boundary and wire tests/playback-session-regression.cjs into a CI workflow.

Verification boundary: confirmed; scope: bounded reviewed context.

Material unknowns

  • How nextTrack / previousTrack / playPause resolve a target after a restore, and whether any code re-queues restored tracks into TrackPlayer. If advancement runs through the restored JS playlist (or the restore path re-queues the snapshot), the objective is supported and the PR is clear once the cited evidence/the cited evidence are fixed; if advancement delegates to the native queue, the empty/truncated cases restore a playlist the player cannot skip through, and the 'queue you can skip through' claim is defeated.
    • Check: Read PlayerContext's advance implementations (nextTrack / previousTrack / playPause) to confirm the post-restore target source.
  • Call sites of trackPlayerService.reset() other than clearPlayer. Determines whether an explicit stop raised from another surface leaves the snapshot behind, resurrecting a session; the PR's own criterion covers clearPlayer, which is wired, so this stays nonblocking.
    • Check: Enumerate trackPlayerService.reset() call sites and confirm they clear the persisted session.

P2 | Confidence: High

Changed mechanism. savePlaybackSession persists only the first MAX_RESTORED_PLAYLIST (200) entries — playlist.slice(0, MAX_RESTORED_PLAYLIST) — but stores index: Math.max(0, Math.min(index, playlist.length - 1)) computed against the uncapped length. The empty-native-queue branch of resolveRestoredSession then clamps against the persisted array (Math.min(session.index, snapshotIds.length - 1)), so a saved index of 250 silently becomes 199.

Reachable path. When the effective playlist handed to playTrack is longer than 200 and the active index is ≥ 200 (e.g. a track deep in a large liked-songs/library queue passed as the playlist), the snapshot holds 200 entries with index = 250. After a restart the restored branch sets currentTrack = restored.playlist[199].

Consequence. The reopened app shows a different song as current, and the song the user was actually on is absent from the restored playlist and Up Next entirely. No crash and no data loss, recoverable by tapping a track — hence P2 — but it is on the exact path this PR adds and it is reachable with ordinary valid input.

Strongest counterevidence. The 200 cap is a deliberate product decision, and the resolver always clamps index-to-array, so restored.playlist[restored.index] can never be undefined. That limits severity, not the defect: the persisted index and the persisted array disagree by construction.

Evidence: changed region in modules/playbackSession.ts; changed region in contexts/PlayerContext.tsx.

P2 | Confidence: Medium

Changed mechanism. The pre-existing native branch reads getPlaybackState, getPosition, getDuration, sets isPlaying / positionStable / durationStable, and registers the PlaybackProgressUpdated listener when none exists. The new restored branch returns after setting only playlist/index/currentTrack/context flags — no playback state, no position/duration, and on that path this function never reaches the listener registration.

Reachable path. The app's own TrackPlayer options set appKilledPlaybackBehavior: AppKilledPlaybackBehavior.ContinuePlayback, so audio can still be live when the JS bundle reloads. Whenever that live native queue is a strict subset of the snapshot — the truncation case this PR exists for — rehydrate takes the restored branch while the native player is actually playing.

Consequence. In that case the UI can present a paused, 0:00 session while audio plays, and progress updates are not subscribed by this function, so UI fed by positionStable is not updated from that path. State depends on an unobserved condition (whether some other mount-time path seeds these values, and on the UI reading isPlaying, which the context type exposes), so this is stated with moderate confidence.

Strongest counterevidence. In the queue-empty case nothing is playing, so a paused 0:00 presentation is correct there — the author acknowledges the paused cold start. The divergence only arises for a live native session.

Owner action: Either seed the restored branch the way the native branch does (read playback state/position/duration and register the progress listener), or restrict the override to the case where the native player is not actually playing.

Evidence: changed region in contexts/PlayerContext.tsx; bounded PR-head context from contexts/PlayerContext.tsx; bounded PR-head context from services/TrackPlayerService.ts.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

After a restore, the play/pause button does nothing.

The saved tracks have no audioUrl because stripVolatile removes it. This branch sets currentTrack to such a track. playPause (Line 2621) returns early with "Player not ready" when currentTrack?.audioUrl is missing. As a result:

  • Empty-queue case: play/pause does nothing on the restored track.
  • Truncated-queue case: native playback may still be running. This branch returns before the existing path calls setIsPlaying, setPositionStable/setDurationStable, and attaches the progress listener. The UI then shows the player as paused with no progress, and pause does not work.

To fix this:

  • When nativeIds is non-empty, run the native state sync: playback state, position, duration, and the progress listener.
  • Copy the native queue item's url into the matching restored tracks.
  • Make playPause fall back to playTrack(currentTrack, playlist, currentIndex) when audioUrl is missing.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Save the session index when the native queue auto-advances.

The session is saved only in playTrack. When TrackPlayer advances on its own, syncCurrentTrackFromPlayer updates currentIndex but never calls savePlaybackSession. If the OS kills the app after that, the empty-queue restore uses an old index and shows an earlier track. Call savePlaybackSession(currentPlaylistContextRef.current, newIndex) in both index-update branches of syncCurrentTrackFromPlayer.

Invalidate pending play requests when clearing playback.

playTrack can await cache information or a queue-conflict choice before saving the session. clearPlayer does not invalidate that request. If playTrack resumes after clearPlaybackSession() submits its removal, it submits a new save afterward. This can repopulate the session and restore playback that the user explicitly cleared.

Increment the request identifier at the start of clearPlayer, then reject stale requests before their state updates and session save:

Update clearPlayer to increment playRequestIdRef.current immediately when
clearing begins, then have playTrack check its captured request identifier after
awaited operations and before updating player state or saving the session;
return when the request is stale so it cannot restore cleared playback.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Clamp the saved index against the truncated playlist.

Line 60 saves at most MAX_RESTORED_PLAYLIST tracks. Line 61 clamps index against the original playlist.length. For a playlist with more than 200 tracks and an active index of 200 or higher, the saved index points past the saved playlist. resolveRestoredSession then clamps it to 199, so the app restores the wrong track as current.

Save a window around the active index, and store the index relative to that window.

Update the session-saving logic around `MAX_RESTORED_PLAYLIST` to save a bounded
window centered around the clamped active index, rather than always taking the
playlist’s first entries. Store the active index relative to the window so it
remains valid and restores the same current track.

The session index was clamped against the full playlist length but persisted
against playlist.slice(0, MAX_RESTORED_PLAYLIST), so on a long playlist the
stored index pointed past the end of what was actually saved and a cold start
resumed on the last stored track instead of the one the user was on.

Clamp against the stored array. Found by the new playback-session scenarios.

…s tile

- Library header had two import buttons (union-merge of playlist-import and
  playlist-transfer both added folder-open-outline). Removed the duplicate;
the file-based M3U/CSV picker now lives inside the single import sheet.
- AI Mix playlist renders with the sparkles artwork and stays pinned after
Local files instead of sharing the generic folder tile.
- Merges origin/fix/playlist-context-restore (PR #100) into the all-PRs build.
