arc42 Frequently Asked Questions

Here we collect answers to frequently asked questions on arc42.

This is supposed to be the reference source for such questions, all other FAQ (e.g. the Leanpub arc42-FAQ or the Leanpub "Communicating Software Architectures with arc42") might contain fewer questions or fixes as this site.

It's powered by Jekyll and a modified TTSCK theme (see below).

Local development

make dev # start the dev server with live reload
make down # stop it

make dev serves this site at http://localhost:4220 (not 0.0.0.0:4220 — Firefox refuses to connect to 0.0.0.0). The port is fixed at 4220, not Jekyll's default 4000, so this dev server can run alongside the other arc42 sites' dev servers without a clash — see raw/port-assignment.md in meta.arc42.org for the full assignment. The number appears in three places that must stay in step: SITE_PORT in the Makefile, the mapping and --port flag in docker-compose.yml, and EXPOSE/CMD in the Dockerfile.

Training dates

The training block at the foot of every FAQ page is rendered at build time from _data/trainings.json — an expiry-filtered copy of https://trainings.arc42.org/api/trainings.json that .github/workflows/refresh-trainings.yml refreshes weekly (Mondays 05:17 UTC, manually via workflow dispatch, or on a trainings-updated repository dispatch that the trainings repo pushes right after the feed republishes, so date changes land within minutes) and commits only when the dates actually changed. The push dispatch is an accelerator, never a dependency (ADR-0006 in meta.arc42.org): if it doesn't arrive, the weekly cron still bounds staleness at one week, and a failed fetch leaves the last committed snapshot in place. Edit dates in the trainings repo's _data/trainings.yml, never here; _includes/training-dates.html owns the rendering, _sass/_utilities.scss the styling. This replaced the former runtime htmx fetch from the Vercel fragment backend (see the integration spec in the arc42 workspace's docs/superpowers/specs/2026-08-04-docs-faq-training-dates-design.md).
