Previously, trimming whitespace at inline HTML boundaries joined adjacent words. This change preserves word separation while collapsing redundant whitespace.

A handler only ever appends to the parent, so "the children grew" says
what the check means. The `!=` form needed a mutant ignore pattern for
its `!equal?` twin; `>` has no equivalent mutation, so the pattern
goes.
