I'm developing firmware for a battery-powered STM32 device. There is not a dedicated battery cutoff IC - it relies on the MCU to detect low battery voltage and turn off. In this type of case, it's helpful to enable flash write protection -- if the brownout detection fails (which is possible), the MCU could behave unpredictably, including modifying the firmware in flash. Flash write protection prevents this.
Additionally, adding support for flash write unprotection will allow for programming devices which already have flash write protection enabled.
I am working on an implementation of this.
