Received a message while the address book was syncing. The contact's name differs from their Whatsapp nick, so this created a new chat under the nick name, which received all the subsequent messages, even after the phone number was paired up with the contact's name.
Trying to quit and reopen, all messages seem to have been lost. Needed to do a full reconnect to restore the chats, thankfully that seems to be somewhat successful.
P.S. One positive thing I will say here is that I'm getting a much more consistent backlog experience at the moment, so that's nice.
