feat(vscode): Configurable daemon mode in extension - #138
Add abbenay.daemonMode with auto (default), embedded, standalone, remote, and disabled; select the daemon connection/startup behavior and reconnect when settings change.
Isolate embedded daemon IPC and its dashboard port. Local auto/standalone requests reuse the selected daemon's reported dashboard URL (including custom ports); embedded requests use a distinct port. Remote dashboard routing preserves the reported port, and missing response URLs are derived from the returned port for older daemons. Failures do not fall back to another instance.
Disabled mode skips daemon startup, connection, and Language Model API registration while leaving Abbenay commands and views available; switching to Disabled closes existing transports.
Add regression tests for daemon modes, Disabled disconnect, embedded/custom remote/local dashboard port routing, missing response URL fallback, dashboard action errors, omitted-port idempotence, and Windows-safe runtime paths.
Update VS Code tooling/lockfile and scoped Mocha dependency overrides to eliminate dependency advisories; no audit allowlist entries were added.
Add a disabled daemon mode for bundled installations.
It avoids daemon startup and model registration unless users opt in.
Test the disabled connect path.
Update vulnerable VS Code packaging and test dependencies.
Pin patched Mocha transitive packages to pass audit.

It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
Added the abbenay.daemonMode setting with auto, embedded, standalone, remote, and disabled options.
Added mode-specific daemon startup, connection, reconnection, and runtime behavior.
Embedded mode uses an isolated runtime environment and dashboard port.
Remote mode supports configured daemon addresses, while standalone mode connects to an existing daemon.
Disabled mode prevents daemon connections and language-model registration.
Dashboard startup now uses the selected mode’s settings and reports the active port.
Bug Fixes
Improved dashboard handling when a daemon is already running.
Documentation
Documented daemon modes, connection behavior, reconnection, and configuration details.
Added decision records covering daemon modes and tooling updates.
The VS Code extension adds five daemon modes with mode-specific runtime paths, startup, connection, dashboard, disabled-mode, and reconnection behavior. Tests and documentation cover these changes. VS Code tooling and npm overrides are also updated.

Confirmed: both daemon processes share the session directory, and the current per-process lock does not provide cross-process safety. Per maintainer direction, session support is being removed rather than adding new session-store synchronization in this PR. Avoid forcing port 8787 for implicit local dashboard requests
packages/vscode/src/daemon/client.ts:879
If the selected local daemon already serves a dashboard started with abbenay web --port 3000, Open Dashboard now fails with ALREADY_EXISTS. This converts an omitted port into an explicit 8787 request, which the new server-side mismatch check rejects instead of returning the existing dashboard URL. Send 0 (no port preference) for implicit auto/standalone local requests, while preserving explicit ports and embedded mode's isolated port. Add a regression test for opening an existing custom-port dashboard.

Probe the Unix socket before treating the daemon as ready.
The new embedded mode calls isDaemonReady(this.localMode). On Unix, that check validates the PID and socket-file existence but does not connect to the socket. If the PID still exists and the socket is stale, connect() skips startDaemon(), then initializeDaemon() fails on register(). Users cannot connect until the stale files are removed.

🟡 Minor · Handle a false result from openExternal. · extension.ts:49-61
vscode.env.openExternal can resolve false when VS Code does not open the URI. openDashboardForClient ignores this result and returns normally. This replaces the daemon's returned dashboard port with 8787 for every configured address. For example, daemonAddress = localhost:50051 with a dashboard on 3000 now opens http://localhost:8787; the previous implementation preserved the returned URL in this case. This can open the wrong instance or an unused port. Replace only the hostname, preserving the advertised port, and update the remote-routing test to cover a custom port.

With daemonAddress: "localhost:50051" and an existing dashboard on port 3000, this replaces the returned http://localhost:3000 with http://localhost:8787. The previous command preserved the returned URL for this localhost endpoint, so this breaks custom-port dashboards and can open another daemon's dashboard. Preserve the returned URL when the derived endpoint is the default localhost URL, and add an address-based localhost/custom-port regression test.
This branch also runs when daemonMode is remote but daemonAddress is missing or invalid: connection initialization fails and resolveDashboardUrl() returns undefined. The warning incorrectly says Abbenay is disabled instead of explaining how to fix the configuration. Distinguish Disabled mode from a missing remote address.
Preserve the daemon's actual dashboard port for remote connections.
When a reachable remote daemon already serves its dashboard on a custom port, StartWebServer returns that port, but dashboardUrlForConnection replaces it with fixed port 8787. openDashboardForClient then opens the wrong URL. Preserve response.port while still replacing the daemon's localhost host with the configured remote host.

Reject dashboard requests while daemon mode is disabled.
abbenay.openDashboard can run while the existing client remains connected during asynchronous reconnect cleanup. startWebServer() then sends the dashboard RPC without checking the current mode. The daemon handles that RPC by starting the web server or returning its existing instance.

The same-port check can accept a dashboard that failed to start. daemon/web/server.ts sets _webPort and _httpServer before listening succeeds, leaves them set on error, and treats any non-null server as running. If another process owns port 8788, the first embedded dashboard attempt fails, but a second returns already_running and opens that other process's service. Clear failed-listen state and test two consecutive attempts against an occupied port; both must report failure rather than return a dashboard URL.
Fill the dashboard URL and port from the daemon response when older servers omit either field.
Keep custom-port dashboard discovery test state from leaking into later tests.

Critical — Security / Functionality: shared session index across daemon instances
Embedded mode isolates IPC/runtime here (ABBENAY_RUNTIME_DIR / optional XDG_RUNTIME_DIR), but spawned daemons still use the same user config tree as auto/standalone (SessionStore → getSessionsDir() in packages/daemon/src/daemon/state.ts). Two live daemons can interleave writes to index.json and per-session files.
PR text defers this to #139; until session storage is removed or isolated per instance, running embedded alongside another local daemon (or switching modes without a clean shutdown) is a data-corruption risk and should not ship without an explicit waiver.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Critical — Security: disconnected dashboard opens a guessed loopback URL
When !client.isConnected(), this branch opens dashboardFallback from resolveDashboardUrl() (e.g. http://localhost:8787 or embedded 8788) without validating the selected daemon. Any process already listening on that port can receive the browser session—including the dashboard API if HTTP auth is disabled or cookies apply.
Ask: Fail closed when disconnected (or require a successful startWebServer / health check on the selected instance). Do not open a static default port.
