Learning: In the mpt-api-python-client repository, tests are configured to use pytest asyncio mode auto, which auto-detects async test functions and runs them without requiring pytest.mark.asyncio. Reviewers should rely on this behavior for all Python test files under tests/, and avoid adding unnecessary asyncio markers in async tests. Ensure test files in tests/ adhere to this convention unless a specific test requires an explicit marker.

The streaming e2e called list() on the export, which buffers every record
and so never exercised the property it appeared to cover: an implementation
that materialised the whole body would have passed it unchanged.
Add sync and async coverage that streams 20,000 operations-scoped catalog
items and asserts on the tracemalloc allocation peak, taken over three whole
reads within a run: a 2,000-record export, the 20,000-record export, and the
same export buffered with list(). Ten times the records must not cost
materially more memory, and buffering must cost far more, which is what shows
the measurement can still see buffering at this volume rather than passing
vacuously on a dataset too small to matter.
Each case runs once per StreamFormat. The property has to hold for both wire
formats and they reach it differently: JSONL reads one record per line, while
JSON parses records out of the {$meta, data} envelope incrementally, which is
the easier one to regress because the obvious implementation deserializes the
whole body first. The parametrisation enumerates the enum, so a format added
later is covered without editing the tests.
Each measured window spans a read from the request opening to the body being
exhausted, because a buffering implementation fills its list before yielding
its first record and a window starting mid-stream would measure only the walk
over an already-materialised list. Verified against a deliberately buffering
stream(), which fails all four cases.
The thresholds are ratios between peaks measured in the same run, not absolute
byte counts, so they need no per-environment calibration. tracemalloc counts
Python allocations rather than process resident size, so the result does not
move with allocator, kernel or GC timing.
Link the two documents to each other: the streaming guide states the memory
bound, and this is the coverage that holds it, so the claim and its evidence
should not be reachable only one at a time.
Correct two things in the e2e guide that this suite would otherwise inherit:
the documented command did not run the e2e suite at all (make test covers
tests/unit; the target is make e2e), and the layout list omitted four suites
that already exist.

Why
The streaming e2e read the export with
list(...), which buffers every record. That neverexercised the property it appeared to cover: an implementation that materialised the whole
body before yielding would have passed it unchanged. This adds coverage that streams at
volume and asserts memory stays bounded.
Now based on main
Rebased onto current
mainand no longer stacked. It accommodates every change merged sinceit was created — the typed truncation error (#392), deletion stubs (#393), the incremental
JSON envelope parser (#399), the
stream_jsonlrename (#395),skip_deleted(#402),stream()on the collection mixins (#396), the streaming guide (#397), the docstringcorrections (#403), and
MPT-Item-Countreported toprogress(#404). Checks, the e2e runand the buffering regression were all re-run on this base, not carried over.
A consistency pass against that merge set also found three things worth correcting, all
included here:
StreamFormatfrommpt_api_client.http.mixins.streaming_mixin. It ispublicly exported from
mpt_api_client.http.mixins, which is the pathstreaming.md documents — and an e2e should consume the
client the way a caller does. These were the only three such imports in
tests/e2e/.docs/e2e_tests.mdtold the reader to run the suite withmake test args="tests/e2e",which does not run it:
make testcoverstests/unit. The target ismake e2e.exchange/,integration/,program/andspotlight/, whichalready exist.
The last two are pre-existing drift rather than anything this branch introduced, fixed here
because this PR adds a section to that file and points readers at it.
Deliberately not covered here:
skip_deleted=Truefrom#402. It makes the yielded countdiffer from
MPT-Item-Countby design, so covering it would mean loosening the exact-countassertion that currently proves the volume was real — a weaker test in exchange for near-zero
memory value, since the flag is a filter over a generator with no buffering surface.
Conflicts with #398: that PR adds
tests/e2e/streaming/__init__.pyandconftest.pyas newfiles too, and edits the same
docs/e2e_tests.md. The fixtures are disjoint (large_collectionhere,
deletable_productthere), so whichever lands second should union the conftest ratherthan take a side.
What it streams
Operations-scoped
catalog.itemson TEST, which holds 129,707 records — roughly sixtimes the 20,000 this coverage exports, so the volume is real and has headroom. Record
payloads are ~966 B, so buffering the 20,000-record export costs ~61 MiB while streaming it
costs ~170 KiB (sync) / ~630 KiB (async).
The fixture reads the collection total first and fails with that count if the environment
holds fewer records than the coverage exports, rather than passing on a dataset too small to
mean anything.
The memory assertion, and why this mechanism
tracemallocallocation peak. It counts Python allocations rather than process residentsize, so the number does not move with allocator behaviour, kernel page reclaim or process
noise — an RSS or wall-clock threshold would. Each peak is reported net of the memory already
live when its window opens, and every window starts with a
gc.collect(), so an objectreleased by an earlier read is never charged to a later one and GC timing cannot shift the
result.
Three whole reads are measured in one run, and the assertions are ratios between them:
list()The second assertion is the constant-memory property. The third is a sensitivity guard
against a vacuous pass: on a dataset too small to matter the two reads would cost about the
same, and the test would fail rather than quietly assert nothing.
Both thresholds are ratios between peaks measured in the same run, never absolute byte
counts, so they need no per-environment calibration.
Every measured window spans a whole read, from the request opening to the body being
exhausted. This is load-bearing: a buffering implementation fills its list before yielding
its first record, so a window that starts mid-stream measures only the walk over an
already-materialised list and sees nothing wrong. An earlier revision of this test sampled
windows inside one long stream and passed against a deliberately buffering
stream().No
pytest.mark.flaky. The assertion does not need it — see the measured headroom below.Verification
make e2e args="tests/e2e/streaming"against the TEST API:Measured over four consecutive runs of each variant, against the thresholds:
The growth ceiling is 4.0, raised from 3.0 during this pass. One async run's short window
happened to peak low (363 KiB against a typical 620 KiB), which inflated its ratio to 1.71 —
a 1.75× margin was tighter than is comfortable for a test that must not be flaky. The short
window is the noisier of the two, and an unusually cheap sample inflates the ratio, so the
ceiling now sits 2.3× above the worst healthy ratio observed while still catching buffering by
2.5×.
Fails when buffering is reintroduced. With
stream()temporarily patched to collect therecords into a list before yielding, both tests fail on the growth assertion:
All four cases fail. Growth is 9.8 against the 4.0 threshold, and the contrast ratio collapses
to 1.0 against the 20.0 threshold — so both assertions catch it, from either direction, in both
wire formats.
make check-all: green (2568 unit tests passed).Docs
docs/streaming.md§ Memory Characteristics states the bound — "a ten-million-record streamcosts the same as a ten-record one... in both wire formats" — but nothing connected that claim
to the coverage that holds it. The two documents now point at each other, so the property and
its evidence are reachable together rather than one at a time.
docs/e2e_tests.mdgains thesuite's own section: dataset requirement, mechanism, and why the thresholds are ratios.
TDR alignment
Checked against both sources of truth; no divergence, and the client is unchanged here anyway.
grounds that "memory would scale with export size, which is the problem streaming exists to
solve". That rejected alternative is exactly what this coverage now makes impossible to
reintroduce unnoticed.
This asserts the same property on the client side of the same contract.
It also closes a latent risk the client TDR records. §8 risk 4: with
limit=N,MPT-Item-Countreports the capped countK = min(matches, N), so a completeness checkwritten against the uncapped match total would raise truncation on every bounded export —
"yet the default
stream()sends no limit, so no default test path would catch it". Bothtests here export with an explicit
limitand drain to exhaustion, which is what triggers theclient's completeness check. That bounded-export path now has live coverage.
Counting is unaffected by
$meta.deletedstubs: every t0 ID yields exactly one object eitherway, so the record-count assertions hold whether or not a stub appears mid-export.
Notes for the reviewer
temporary and is not part of this branch.
tests/e2e/streaming/memory_probe.pycarries the protocol and the reasoning behind eachconstant, so the thresholds are not bare magic numbers.
docs/e2e_tests.mddocuments the e2ecommand as
make test args="tests/e2e", but the suite runs viamake e2e.catalog.itemsstreaming.tracemallocchecks for bounded streaming memory and buffered-memory contrast.
