In `@mpt_api_client/exceptions.py`:
- Line 290: Update the response JSON parsing flow around response.json() to
decode response.content strictly as UTF-8 before parsing, so UTF-16 and UTF-32
payloads are rejected rather than converted into MPTAPIError. Add a regression
test covering a UTF-16 JSON response and preserve the existing valid UTF-8 error
handling behavior.

File: mpt_api_client/exceptions.py:292-292
Timestamp: 2026-09-08T16:18:22.682Z
Learning: In `mpt_api_client/exceptions.py`, `transform_http_status_exception` intentionally uses HTTPX `Response.json()` so detected UTF-8, UTF-16, and UTF-32 JSON objects become `MPTAPIError` and retain structured fields such as `detail`, `title`, and `traceId`. Non-object JSON and bytes that HTTPX cannot decode become `MPTHttpError`, with the HTTP status code preserved. `tests/unit/test_exceptions.py::test_transform_detected_json_encoding` protects this behavior for UTF-16 and UTF-32.

transform_http_status_exception handed response.json() straight to
MPTAPIError, whose __init__ calls payload.get(...). An error body that is
valid JSON but not an object - a bare string, null, or an array - made
that call raise AttributeError, so the caller lost the HTTP status
entirely and could not branch on it. The payload: dict[str, str]
annotation confirms a non-dict was never intended. Returning
BadRequest("Invalid filter expression") is idiomatic ASP.NET Core and
serializes to a bare JSON string, so a hand-written collection action
answering 400 for invalid RQL reaches this shape without any
misconfiguration.
The streaming error mapping made it worse: raise_streaming_error picks
MPTStreamingNotSupportedError, MPTStreamingNotAcceptableError and
MPTStreamingOverCapError off the status of an MPTHttpError, so a bare
string body on 406 or 413 lost the typed streaming error and the
over-cap detail with it.
The same except clause also missed UnicodeDecodeError, which
response.json() raises for a body whose bytes do not decode - a
ValueError but not a JSONDecodeError - and the fallback
response.content.decode() would then have failed the same way.
Decode the body first, catch ValueError to cover both decode failures,
and build an MPTAPIError only when the payload really is a dict.
Everything else becomes an MPTHttpError carrying the raw body with
undecodable bytes replaced, which is right for a human-readable
diagnostic rather than record data. The status code now survives every
body shape.
Tests parametrize the error-body shapes - object, bare string, null,
array, non-JSON, empty, and an ISO-8859-1 body - over the paged path and
over 501, 406 and 413 on the sync and async streaming paths; the shared
cases live in tests/unit/conftest.py. A further case pins the UTF-16 and
UTF-32 objects that httpx's encoding detection parses, so the
documented rule matches what the code does. Document the selection rule
in docs/architecture.md and note in docs/streaming.md that the status,
not the body, decides the streaming error type.

Problem
transform_http_status_exceptionhandedresponse.json()straight toMPTAPIError, whose__init__callspayload.get(...). An error body that is valid JSON but not an object —a bare string,
null, or an array — made that call raiseAttributeError, so the caller lostthe HTTP status entirely and could not branch on it. The
payload: dict[str, str]annotationconfirms a non-dict was never intended.
return BadRequest("Invalid filter expression")is idiomatic ASP.NET Core and serializes to abare JSON string, so a hand-written collection action answering
400for invalid RQL reachesthis shape without any misconfiguration.
The streaming error mapping made it worse:
raise_streaming_errorpicksMPTStreamingNotSupportedError,MPTStreamingNotAcceptableErrorandMPTStreamingOverCapErroroff the status of anMPTHttpError, so a bare-string body on406or
413lost the typed streaming error — and the over-cap detail with it.The same
except json.JSONDecodeErrorclause also missedUnicodeDecodeError, whichresponse.json()raises for a body that is not valid UTF-8 (aValueError, but not aJSONDecodeError); the fallbackresponse.content.decode()would then have failed the sameway.
