Improve mask bounds and shared mask/shape path editing - #1978
Layer controls follow enabled mask geometry while source bounds continue to determine render allocation and effect coordinates. Mask and editable Bezier shape paths share point selection and Free Transform, including selected vertex subsets, a movable pivot, oriented bounds, constrained snapping and per-gesture Undo/Redo.
The workflow also selects and reveals newly created paths, duplicates masks below their originals, supports Timeline toggle/range selection without duplicate reveal rows, and compensates animated Position at the current time when centering the anchor. Creation controls adjust draft geometry without also zooming or scrubbing. Toolbar-created masks fit local layer content; masks drawn on transformed layers commit the complete preview path and both Bezier tangent arrays.
The branch is rebuilt directly on upstream main at e71dd629c56c78a82959ee50c271da9209c55b80, with 46 changed files. The feature diff contains no workflow, encoder, web-app, dependency or project-schema changes. Implementation uses the split cmd, session, menu and viewer modules and tests/it integration tests. The previously included font prerequisite #1973 is already upstream.
Selection bounds exclude feather, effects and footage alpha. Bounded geometry/cache work falls back to source bounds for invalid or excessive geometry; valid empty masks have no box. These interactions are primarily validated in 2D.
Provenance: drawing options selectively adapt pravdomil's #1300 at 49a1374c1a67a9a6ace426301e017a3cebeb0883; constrained snapping preserves WillPastor's contribution from yuraizmailov#1 at 13d6d7b35bf36d66e73a5ca9369667e9dfa83b77, credited in the commit. See docs/mask-workflows.md.
Shape-draft keys are processed once per frame across the normal and Tab shortcut passes. Native menus update when interactive transform-history labels change, without rebuilding solely because playback time advances.
Validation on macOS: CARGO_PROFILE_DEV_DEBUG=0 cargo xtask ci passed all eight phases: 5,031 passed, 0 failed, 33 ignored across 93 completed suites. No tests or gate phases were excluded. Regression tests cover draft-key handling across the normal and Tab shortcut passes, idle playback menu invalidation, and time-sensitive interactive Undo/Redo labels. Windows/Linux native interaction was not rerun locally.
A headless snapshot of a synthetic masked layer was rendered and visually inspected with Free Transform active and the mask revealed in Timeline.

Walkthrough
The changes add configurable shape and mask creation, mask-aware selection bounds, timeline selection and reveal behavior, mask duplication, anchor centering, and interactive path transforms with session history.
selection_bounds evaluates enabled masks with caching and fallback behavior. Viewer bounds and snapping use these bounds. Anchor centering uses selection bounds and updates Position at the current layer time.
Shape options now configure polygon, star, rounded-rectangle, and mask paths. Viewer drafts accept keyboard and wheel adjustments, and shape and mask creation selects and reveals the created item.
Mask creation and duplication update property and vertex selection. Timeline selection supports modifier-based toggles and ranges; reveal traversal avoids duplicate rows and supports scrolling to group rows.
Path transform command and history support crates/engine/src/cmd/paths.rs, crates/engine/src/session/dispatch.rs, crates/engine/src/session/edit.rs, crates/automation/src/confine.rs, crates/engine/src/tests/stubs.rs, docs/control-protocol.md
path.freeTransform accepts explicit path targets and path or composition coordinate space. It validates targets and geometry, supports basis angles and fromStart edits, and includes merge and history handling.
The viewer adds shared transform boxes, pivot and orientation controls, path-scoped vertex gestures, and axis-constrained snapping. UI history tracks pivot and geometry changes through undo and redo.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review 532b0
This change adds shared Free Transform and shape and mask editing, and the remaining findings are minor. A shape option adjustment can occasionally apply twice when Tab is pressed in the same frame, and the native menu may be refreshed more often than necessary during playback. Neither blocks the main workflows, but both are worth fixing before merge.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 1b674
The change expands shared editing commands and coordinates temporary transform state with document history. Target validation and transactional updates limit failures. No introduced security issue was established, but review coverage remains incomplete.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
observed — The new explicit-path transform resolves targets in the active composition, limits the submitted list to 10,000 entries, deduplicates targets and rejects locked layers or masks before mutation.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
inferred — Accepting paths without UI selection extends the established explicit-target command model rather than demonstrating a new authorization bypass. The base already exempted explicit layer and property targets, and the existing control protocol intentionally permits every engine command.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Mask-aware selection bounds are separate from raster allocation and effect coordinates. Excessive path-element counts or non-finite evaluated inputs fall back to source bounds, containing this geometry work without changing the rendering-allocation contract.

Hi! While testing 5a236b30, I reproduced a Shift-snapping edge case.
With layer and guide snapping enabled, set up these objects in composition coordinates:
A shape or mask vertex at (200,103).
An 80×80 solid rotated 45° and centered at (238,104).
A vertical guide at x=241.
Select the vertex and Shift-drag the pointer to (237,104). Expected landing: (241,103), on the guide. Actual: (238,103), with the snap cross at (238,104). The closer off-axis point wins before the movement is clamped.
I have a focused patch that filters unreachable targets before snapping, preserving your transform and Undo handling. Three regression tests fail before the correction and pass afterward; the viewer and UI library suites and UI release Clippy also pass. Native Windows testing confirms the corrected landing and feedback.
Full CI encounters the same Windows Stills dead-code warning on both the patched and untouched PR head.
Would a small PR with the correction and regression tests be helpful, and which branch would you prefer it target?
Hey @WillPastor, thanks for catching this! Yes, please open a PR against the pr/mask-editing branch in my fork, yuraizmailov/effectcraft. We’ll check it and include it in this PR. Thanks for helping out!
Filter targets unreachable along the constrained composition-space axis
before snapping, preserving accurate landing and feedback. Keep existing
transform and Undo handling, and add interaction and solver regressions.
Commit the full transformed mask path, not an axis-aligned rectangle.
When a mask is created on a transformed AV layer, the viewer ghost uses mask_path in composition space. The current commit inverse-transforms only two corners, rebuilds an axis-aligned rectangle, and calls layer.addMask. Rotation can therefore change the committed mask's position, scale, and orientation relative to the ghost.
mask.new already accepts layer-space vertices and both tangent arrays. Transform the full path with inv.apply for vertices and inv.apply_vec for tangents, then submit it through mask.new. This is a localized viewer fix and does not require a new engine command.

Hi @yuraizmailov, thanks for this PR! main has changed a lot since it was opened, and it now conflicts with main, so it needs a rebase before we can review it for merging.
Most of the conflict comes from the shared module layout (#2491), which moved or split files this PR touches:
When you rebase, please also make sure it fits the other recent changes:
Layout (refactor: shared module layout (craft-contrib#20) #2491): put new code in the split files (the old paths only re-export). Each crate's integration tests are one binary, tests/it/main.rs with modules in tests/it/.

ReviewerA — source-read COMMENT (not an approval)
This PR improves mask bounds and shared mask and shape path editing, and I could not fetch its diff: it changes 1,118 files (+147,660 −54,921), which GitHub refuses over 300 files. From the first 100 files it touches the effects crate, the web app, crates/av1enc (an AV1 encoder, which has nothing to do with masks), and the CI workflows (six files). I read none of the code. A change of this size, with unrelated areas in it, is almost certainly a branch that has accumulated other work or a merge of main into the branch; it cannot be reviewed, bisected or reverted. Please rebase the mask and path work onto current main as a small PR, and send the encoder and workflow changes separately; changes to workflows especially need their own review under the org rules (workflows call craft-common-actions or pin actions by hash). I did not run anything.
I ran nothing and have no exact-head CI result for this PR, so this is not an approval. Where a diff was long I read its code hunks rather than every generated or documentation line.
Rebuild the mask/path feature directly on upstream main e71dd62,
without retaining the old branch's merge history. Keep geometric mask
selection bounds, shared mask/shape Free Transform and gesture history,
timeline selection/reveal, and shape/mask creation controls together.
Preserve the constrained snapping contribution and the fixes for full
preview-path conversion and source-sized toolbar masks. Restore the undo
method's documentation to its own declaration after moving session helpers.

Keep the unconditional reset. delete_selection uses it to distinguish loose vertex selection from whole-mask selection, and selected keys take priority over vertex deletion. Removing the first reset would change Delete behavior for additive selection.

Bounded geometry/cache work falls back to source bounds for invalid or excessive geometry; valid empty masks have no box. These interactions are primarily validated in 2D.

Seedocs/mask-workflows.md.Shape-draft keys are processed once per frame across the normal and Tab shortcut passes. Native menus update when interactive transform-history labels change, without rebuilding solely because playback time advances.
Validation on macOS:
CARGO_PROFILE_DEV_DEBUG=0 cargo xtask cipassed all eight phases: 5,031 passed, 0 failed, 33 ignored across 93 completed suites. No tests or gate phases were excluded. Regression tests cover draft-key handling across the normal and Tab shortcut passes, idle playback menu invalidation, and time-sensitive interactive Undo/Redo labels. Windows/Linux native interaction was not rerun locally.A headless snapshot of a synthetic masked layer was rendered and visually inspected with Free Transform active and the mask revealed in Timeline.
