Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
SVG footage now renders static pattern fills and strokes as repeating tiles, with support for pattern units, transforms, and local pattern inheritance.
Invalid patterns can use their specified fallback color; patterns without a usable fallback may render transparently.
Improvements
Converting patterned SVGs to editable shape layers retains shape geometry but omits unsupported pattern paints.
Documentation
SVG support notes describe pattern capabilities and limitations, including unsupported external references and nested paint servers. They also clarify which pattern content is supported.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
The SVG parser now resolves supported static pattern fills and strokes. SVG footage rasterizes pattern tiles with configured units, transforms, inheritance, and fallbacks. Editable shape-layer conversion retains geometry but omits pattern paint items.
Changes: SVG Pattern Paints
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Pattern model and resolution crates/svg/src/lib.rs
The parser adds pattern paint data and resolves local references, inherited attributes, and supported content. It rejects unsupported pattern features and limits pattern attribute scanning.
The rasterizer renders pattern content into budgeted tiles and samples repeating tiles with seam wrapping. Tests cover units, transforms, reference behavior, compositing, allocation fallback, and invalid patterns.
Editable conversion and support notes crates/engine/src/interchange/vector.rs, crates/engine/src/tests/vector_import.rs, crates/svg/Cargo.toml, crates/svg/README.md
Editable conversion omits pattern fill and stroke items while retaining shape geometry. The package description and README document pattern support, limitations, fallbacks, and editable conversion behavior.
#2549: The issue reports missing repeated artwork from SVG pattern fills; this change adds pattern paint parsing and rasterization.
Suggested reviewers:echelon, dylanmtaylor
Merge Risk: Low · previous review ec4e5
Pasted SVG shapes can lose their fallback fill or stroke. Preserve the fallback or accept this limitation.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to ec4e5
Pattern references remain local and supported content is restricted to static artwork. However, a crafted SVG can repeatedly rebuild expensive pattern tiles: the parsing and live-image limits do not constrain total rendering work. The supported impact is availability of the process rendering that SVG, not additional privileges or external-resource access.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · inferred: Shared parsed patterns can amplify rendering work beyond the enforced budgets. A document can contain many same-viewport references to one pattern with many solid-painted children and a large, individually permitted tile. Parsing converts that content once, but rasterization redraws every child into a newly allocated tile for every reference, even before checking destination coverage. Work therefore multiplies reference count, content complexity, and tile area while released surfaces keep the live-image budget below its limit. The base did not render pattern content. This introduces a potential CPU-exhaustion path when rendering attacker-supplied SVGs.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated boundary is supplied SVG data entering the process that rasterizes it. Pattern dimensions, child content, and reference count control work within that process. The inspected path does not establish a cross-tenant service, privileged operation, or external data-store impact.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — The availability attack uses ordinary supported content: many references share one parsed pattern, while every reference triggers a complete tile render. Tile dimensions are not clipped to destination dimensions, so a small output does not prevent expensive tile work. Parser caching and sequential surface release allow this multiplication without exhausting the corresponding parsing or live-surface counters. This is a static inference, not a measured exploit.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The source-reference boundary remains document-local: href and xlink:href resolve through the local ID map, not through a network loader. Unsupported resource-bearing or executable elements are not admitted as pattern content. These restrictions counter external-resource and executable-content concerns but do not address repeated static tile rendering.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Tile allocation uses checked arithmetic and the existing 512 MiB tracked live-image budget. Invalid transforms or allocation rejection use the reference fallback when present. Allocated tiles are released on the subsequent transform-validation failure and normal completion paths. This limits tracked simultaneous image allocation, not cumulative rendering work or all auxiliary memory.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Add a cumulative per-render work allowance charged before each tile render, accounting for tile area and content traversal. Exhaustion should have an explicit bounded outcome independent of whether individual allocations remain affordable.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "SVG: support static pattern fills and strokes" matches the main change. The raw summary describes static SVG pattern paint support in the SVG model, rasterizer, and engine import path, with tests and README updates. The title is specific, short, and states the primary change. The pattern handling is the central feature. Pattern paints are omitted when converting to editable shape layers, which the title does not mention, but that is a limit on the feature and does not make the title misleading.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue [#2549] requires rendered SVG pattern artwork or a clear vector-safe fallback. crates/svg/src/lib.rs resolves supported static pattern paints, units, transforms, tile geometry, local href/xlink:href inheritance, and fallbacks. crates/svg/src/raster.rs renders pattern tiles for fills and strokes and repeats them across coverage. Invalid or unavailable patterns retain the URL fallback when one exists. crates/svg/src/tests.rs covers rendering, inheritance, caching, invalid patterns, allocation limits, and fallbacks. Editable shape conversion omits pattern paint items, but the SVG footage path renders the pattern.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes remain within [#2549]. Pattern parsing, rasterization, bounded caching and processing, editable-import behavior, regression tests, documentation, and package metadata support pattern rendering or its documented limitations. Pattern strokes extend the same paint-server feature and do not establish unrelated scope. Reported baseline failures are in unchanged files.

Inherit the pattern’s ancestor styles.
Style::default() discards styles inherited from the pattern’s ancestors. For example, a pattern under <svg fill="red"> renders an unstyled child rectangle black. Cascade the pattern’s ancestors before cascading first. SVG specifies inheritance from those ancestors, not from the painted shape. (w3.org)

Bound cache keys for unresolved paint IDs.
A crafted SVG can inherit a 1 MiB url(#...) from a group and reference it from 2,000 distinct viewports. If the ID is missing, each cache entry retains another 1 MiB key, while parse_pattern returns before charging pattern work. This can exhaust memory during import. Avoid caching missing IDs, or bound and share cache keys.

Thank you for this contribution! I reviewed it today and I'm holding it for now rather than landing it:
The pattern support looks carefully built. Per our rule, a CodeRabbit security finding blocks it. Please bound the pattern cache (do not insert keys for ids that aren't elements) and address the two inheritance Majors, then resubmit or update.
Once that's addressed, it'll get picked up in a future batch. If you haven't already, please come join us on Discord: https://discord.gg/artcraft.

Preserve the pattern fallback as editable paint.
When edit.pasteSvg imports url(#p) red, shape_items reaches the Paint::Pattern(_) => None branch for both fill and stroke. The pattern retains red as its fallback, but this branch drops the editable paint entirely. Convert the retained fallback to Paint::Color, including its alpha, before building the corresponding solid fill or stroke. This preserves the previous editable fallback without importing pattern artwork.

Update shape_items so Paint::Pattern preserves any retained fallback as editable

ReviewerA — source-read COMMENT (not an approval)
I read the first hunk: in the SVG import, the stroke paint is now an Option built by a match over its paint kinds (colour, gradient, ...), and per the title static pattern fills and strokes are supported. A pattern in SVG (<pattern> with patternUnits, patternContentUnits, patternTransform and viewBox) is a tile of arbitrary content: importing it as a layer fill or an actual repeated tile needs the units and the transform to be right, which is the usual source of errors, and an untrusted file may nest patterns (a pattern that references itself, or one inside another to a great depth) or use a tiny tile over a huge area (millions of repeats). Bound the depth and the repeat count, and detect cycles. "Static" suggests animated patterns are left out: say so. I did not read the rest. Add tests for a pattern fill and stroke with each unit mode, a viewBox, a transform, a self-referencing pattern (a clean error or a fallback), and a 1-pixel tile over a large rectangle (time). Nothing was run.
I ran nothing and have no exact-head CI result for this PR, so this is not an approval. Where a diff was long I read its code hunks rather than every generated or documentation line.
@FredApps Thanks for the review. I’ve pushed fixes for the points you raised.
Pattern references now have depth/cycle protection and bounded work. I also added tests for both unit modes, fill/stroke, transforms, self-references, deep links, and small tiles over a large area.
viewBox is still unsupported for patterns and falls back to the supplied color, that is now documented and tested. I also fixed the CI formatting/test issue
