PR intention

Serialization sign-extends a negative nVersion into the nType half of the 32-bit version field. A transaction received with nType == 0 is therefore re-serialized (for its txid, on disk and when relayed) with nType == -1. After DIP3 the two encodings of the same txid get different verdicts:

  • the node handed the nType == 0 bytes accepts it;
  • every node that sees the re-serialized form rejects it with bad-txns-type.

This PR rejects negative versions after DIP3 in both encodings, with the same bad-txns-type.

No activation height is needed. Nothing changes before DIP3, and for any encoding a node receives from peers or reads from disk the verdict is unchanged. The only node that behaves differently is one handed the nType == 0 bytes directly, which now agrees with the rest of the network.

Code changes brief

Easiest to review commit by commit:

  1. Tests: cover negative tx version encodings adds a unit test that passes on master and pins today's behaviour. Both encodings share a txid, but after DIP3 only the re-serialized one fails.
  2. Consensus: reject negative tx versions from DIP3 adds the check inside the DIP3 branch of ContextualCheckTransaction (src/validation.cpp). The test diff in this commit shows exactly which verdicts change: the nType == 0 encoding at versions -32768 and -1, after DIP3.

Removed from earlier revisions of this PR (history rewritten): the scheduled HF heights and consensus parameter, -rejectnegativetxversionheight, the mempool policy check, the functional test, and the version-packing rewrite (it produced identical bytes).

Validation:

  • A standalone harness built from the real transaction serialization and the real ContextualCheckTransaction (this branch and master), run over every 16-bit version. Master gives the two encodings different verdicts in 32,768 cases; this branch in 0. No verdict changes before DIP3 or for re-serialized encodings. The same harness confirms that commit 1's expectations pass on master, and that commit 2's fail there only on the two flipped lines.
  • Full build and unit tests: CI.
  • Before merging: a fresh -reindex on mainnet and testnet, to confirm no block after DIP3 contains a negative-version transaction.

Negative transaction versions are rejected from the DIP0003 height onward rather than at the scheduled activation height. On mainnet, testnet, and devnet, that rule takes effect years of blocks earlier than planned. Nodes running this code could reject existing chain history and fork from the network. The rule needs its own activation height before merging.

PR intention

Prevent negative transaction versions from producing inconsistent version/type interpretation after serialization round trips.

Activation heights intentionally remain unset pending coordinated deployment, including ChainLock quorum readiness.

Code changes brief

  • Add a height-gated consensus rejection for negative transaction versions.
  • Preserve existing packed transaction bytes while using defined unsigned packing for transaction hashes and legacy sighashes.
  • Add regression coverage for the activation boundary and round-trip behavior.

Validation:

  • git diff --check
  • Reviewed the complete diff against current origin/master
  • Unit tests not run because this host does not have a C++20-capable Firo build toolchain.

CodeAnt-AI Description

Reject negative transaction versions at a coordinated activation height

What Changed

  • Transactions with negative versions are rejected once the configured activation height is reached.
  • Transaction serialization and deserialization preserve existing transaction bytes and hash results, including negative versions.
  • Mainnet, testnet, devnet, and regtest leave the new rejection rule inactive until deployment is scheduled.
  • Added regression coverage for behavior before activation, at activation, and across serialization round trips.

Impact

✅ Consistent transaction hashes across serialization round trips
✅ Negative-version transactions rejected after activation
✅ Coordinated consensus deployment

Reject versions that cannot round-trip as signed 16-bit values.

nVersion is int32_t in both transaction types. An in-memory value of 32768 passes the negative-version check, serializes with low bits 0x8000, and deserializes as -32768. This can make consensus validation disagree across nodes when the rule activates.

Relay policy rejects versions above 3, so this path is limited to non-standard transactions. Reject values above INT16_MAX at the activation gate and add a serialization round-trip test.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Remove stale mempool transactions when the rule activates.

On testnet, devnet, or regtest, a normal negative-version transaction can enter the mempool before activation because standard-version policy is disabled. If it remains unconfirmed when the tip reaches the block before activation, removeForBlock does not remove it. The block assembler can select it, then TestBlockValidity rejects the template under this new rule and CreateNewBlock throws. Revalidate or remove affected mempool entries and descendants at the height transition; also check the reorg path. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

PR intention

Prevent negative transaction versions from producing inconsistent version/type interpretation after serialization round trips, and keep those transactions out of the mempool before the consensus rule activates.

Mainnet, testnet and devnet activation heights intentionally remain unset pending coordinated deployment, including ChainLock quorum readiness. Regtest activates at height 500 and exposes a regtest-only override for boundary testing.

Code changes brief

  • Add a height-gated consensus rejection for negative transaction versions.
  • Preserve existing packed transaction bytes while using defined unsigned packing for transaction hashes and legacy sighashes.
  • Reject negative-version transactions from the mempool at every height, independent of standardness; after activation the consensus rejection still wins.
  • Add regtest default, test helper and -rejectnegativetxversionheight=<n> override.
  • Add pinned sighash, contextual boundary, mempool/miner/block and functional RPC coverage.
  • Group the activation parameter with the related Spark-era activation fields.

Review verification notes:

  • The branch already contained a direct negative-version contextual unit test, so the literal claim that no unit test constructed one was refuted. The new tests cover the previously missing sighash, mempool, miner, block and RPC paths.
  • No miner or reorg-specific guards were added; all mempool admission routes share the policy check.
  • A raw pre-activation negative-version block is reserialized canonically when written to disk and is then interpreted with type -1 on replay. The mempool policy prevents local relay/mining of these transactions, but complete live-network enforcement still requires coordinated activation heights; selecting those heights remains out of scope here.
  • A review suggestion to reject in-memory nVersion > INT16_MAX was not applied: wire deserialization always narrows the version to signed 16 bits, and production transaction constructors use standard versions. This would not alter validation of received transactions or blocks.
  • Witness sighash has omitted nType since before this PR, while IsWitnessEnabled currently returns false. Changing witness signing would be a separate consensus change; this PR only preserves the existing legacy sighash bytes.

Validation:

  • Exhaustive standalone C++ comparison over all 2^32 version/type pairs and all 2^32 raw headers: zero old/new packing mismatches; 2,147,450,880 non-round-tripping headers; zero with a nonnegative version.
  • Independent legacy-sighash implementation reproduced all 500 sighash.json vectors and all four pinned review values.
  • build/bin/test_firo --run_test=transaction_tests: 8/8 passed.
  • build/bin/test_firo --run_test=sighash_tests: 3/3 passed.
  • build/bin/test_firo --run_test=negative_version_chain_tests: 1/1 passed.
  • Policy-guard mutation: the boundary test admitted the transaction and template construction threw bad-txns-version, as expected.
  • Sighash mutation: the negative/type-zero hash changed to 1ad3a5636242713364910d1498192cd90714416253195fd06ecba88407e4341d, as expected.
  • qa/pull-tester/rpc-tests.py negative_tx_version.py: passed.
  • ctest --output-on-failure: all 89 built project tests passed; four dependency tests were initially not run because the targeted build had not produced their executables. After cmake --build build -j8, those four tests passed 4/4 via CTest, covering all 93 registered tests.
  • git diff --check: passed.
  • On fb56a66c7, all six CMake jobs, Jenkins, and four Guix jobs passed; Windows Guix was still pending at last check. Current head 535f7842a only removes a test const_cast; test_firo rebuilt and negative_version_chain_tests passed 1/1. Fresh CI for this head is running.

CodeAnt-AI Description

Reject negative transaction versions consistently while preserving legacy transaction hashes

What Changed

  • Negative-version transactions are rejected from the mempool at all heights, preventing them from being relayed or mined.
  • Once the configured activation height is reached, blocks and transactions with negative versions are rejected by consensus.
  • Transaction serialization and signature hashing preserve the existing legacy byte format for negative versions.
  • Regtest activates the rule at height 500 and supports a command-line override for testing activation boundaries.
  • Added coverage for serialization, signature hashes, mempool admission, block validation, mining, and RPC behavior.

Impact

✅ Fewer invalid transactions relayed or mined
✅ Consistent rejection at the consensus activation height
✅ Preserved legacy transaction hashes and signatures

Keep the activation heights inactive until deployment is coordinated.

This parameter changes consensus validation. If the heights are not approved and coordinated, nodes can apply different rules when a negative-version transaction reaches block validation. Use INT_MAX, the documented inactive value, for mainnet, testnet, and devnet.

Serialization sign-extends a negative nVersion into the nType half, so
a transaction received with nType == 0 is re-serialized (for its txid,
on disk and when relayed) with nType == -1. Pin the current behaviour:
both encodings share a txid, but after DIP3 only the re-serialized one
fails the type check.

After DIP3 the two encodings of the same txid got different verdicts:
the node handed the nType == 0 bytes accepted the transaction, while
every node seeing the re-serialized form rejected it with
bad-txns-type.

Reject negative versions inside the DIP3 branch of
ContextualCheckTransaction with the same bad-txns-type, so both
encodings are treated alike. This changes no verdict before DIP3 and
none for any encoding a node receives from peers or reads from disk,
so it needs no activation height.

User description

PR intention

Prevent negative transaction versions from producing inconsistent version/type interpretation after serialization round trips, and keep those transactions out of the mempool before the consensus rule activates.

Activation heights are mainnet 1,405,900, testnet 213,500, devnet 4,000 and regtest 500. Mainnet is 17,344 blocks after height 1,388,556, about 30 days 2 hours 40 minutes at 2.5-minute target spacing. These heights are the coordinated deployment schedule. Operators must ensure miner and ChainLock quorum readiness before reaching them; if readiness slips, the affected height must be moved later. Regtest retains its override for boundary testing.

The mempool policy prevents local relay/mining of these transactions. The finite network heights now schedule enforcement, so operators must coordinate upgrades before reaching them.
  • CodeRabbit suggested restoring INT_MAX unless deployment was coordinated. That suggestion was not applied because these finite heights are the selected deployment schedule; readiness remains an operational gate before activation.

Validation:

  • Exhaustive standalone C++ comparison over all 2^32 version/type pairs and all 2^32 raw headers: zero old/new packing mismatches; 2,147,450,880 non-round-tripping headers; zero with a nonnegative version.
  • Independent legacy-sighash implementation reproduced all 500 sighash.json vectors and all four pinned review values.
  • build/bin/test_firo --run_test=transaction_tests: 8/8 passed.
  • build/bin/test_firo --run_test=sighash_tests: 3/3 passed.
  • build/bin/test_firo --run_test=negative_version_chain_tests: 1/1 passed.
  • Policy-guard mutation: the boundary test admitted the transaction and template construction threw bad-txns-version, as expected.
  • Sighash mutation: the negative/type-zero hash changed to 1ad3a5636242713364910d1498192cd90714416253195fd06ecba88407e4341d, as expected.
  • qa/pull-tester/rpc-tests.py negative_tx_version.py: passed.
  • ctest --output-on-failure: all 89 built project tests passed; four dependency tests were initially not run because the targeted build had not produced their executables. After cmake --build build -j8, those four tests passed 4/4 via CTest, covering all 93 registered tests.
  • git diff --check: passed.
  • On fb56a66c7, all six CMake jobs, Jenkins, and four Guix jobs passed; Windows Guix was still pending at last check. The activation-height update at 23684b1c4 compiled src/chainparams.cpp, passed git diff --check, and produced no Clang-Tidy diagnostics on the modified lines. Cppcheck reported only pre-existing findings away from those lines. Targeted unit tests were not rerun locally for this constant-only update; fresh CI is running.

Gate negative-version rejection at a dedicated activation height.

ContextualCheckTransaction rejects negative versions as soon as DIP0003Height is reached. The stated negative-version schedule is later on mainnet, testnet, and devnet. A block accepted before that schedule can therefore be rejected after DIP0003 activates. Add a separate consensus parameter, such as nRejectNegativeTxVersionStartBlock, initialize it for each network, and use it for this check. Update the test to cover a height after DIP0003 but before the scheduled activation.
